What's up with SEVENS???

We're back again, talking about the same children card game anime, after a long way of 9 episodes (Minus the 5 weeks hiatus due to the Co-Vid-19 Parademic),  Before we get in, yes, i get this is a new series, but there's still a room for criticism for the future, i know the show runners won't read this but still, even SEVENS isn't perfect, right? If you haven't watched the series yet, or planning to watch the dub instead, don't read this. Also, since it's an on-going series, things might change. So, without further ado, let's begin.

Slow down, Road Runner!

Hologram Man | YuGiOh! World
Holy cow, the pacing is absurdly fast, probably due to how Rush Duels functioned, usually do not exceed turn 5, which basically either slow kills, or simply OTKs, sometimes, the episode just happens, and sometimes, you barely feel anything, yeah, the series started, as well as Rush Duels, there are good duels indeed, however, there will be always those forgettable duels and/or characters due not them being too related or just not introduced properly. It could be NAS' paranoia of more than 1 parter duels ever since VRAINS? I don't know.

Bitch, i ain't Duelin' cuz i Suck!

File:Romin finally agrees to Rush Duel.png
You guessed it, yeah, it's Romin, as the premise we got about her, so far, she's uninteresting as a character. Nothing from her stands out aside from "cute"? Seriously she would be waifu if she wasn't f*****g 11. being good at spotrs, as well as being the lead guitarist of RoaRomin, the Elementary School Band and few reactionary gags in few-far-between, something Gakuto also does, because, they have nothing else to do. At first, i was interested to see the whole "not being interested in dueling" goes with her, eventually, to bang a "i don't know what a Special Summon is" is dead end. Yeah, sure, lot of kids cannot understand a very complex game from the start, but the fact that we don't get her attempting to duel secretly given that she can easily learn it from Rush Duels, really baffles me, yes she did Duel, but it only took her to hear Kaizo explaining to her how to Tribute Summon, that alone, would probably set a precedent for her character for the rest of the series, hopefully not. Right now, she's just a forgettable character who people only remember her because "she's cute go brrrrrr".

Because we're not Yuga, we've got nothing else to do, except for few gags.

File:Gakuto yanks Rook back as he tries to look in Romin's guitar case.png
Even when Luke was used for few gags, he did duel occasionally, but Gakuto so far, is basically Bastion Misawa, from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, he has barely any screentime, despite him having cornered Yuga almost to defeat him, he just remained for few gags here and there, which is a shame to see good characters have nothing to do other than to be relevant for few gags (mostly with Luke), don"t get me wrong, he is funny, and i do like him, but, just like Romin, he's barely used.

Was Yuya's EGAO not enough for you? Here's BOKU NO ROADA

Yuga draws a card after returning "Sevens Road Magician" to his Deck, hoping for his ace monster to come.
The only reason i know this guy exists, is because he's the main character, like other than "roads", hacking, other than  that, he's just Yuya Sakaki from ARC-V, only lamer, and as gullible as Yugi, i won't dispute the wins and losses here, but ever since he opened the road to Rush Duels, what can you tell me about this character other than "being adorable cinnamon" and the intrusive plot points that drag him to duel that often tend to be filler, but that besides the point, he's basically like Jaden and Yuya combined waiting for something interesting to hit him like a meteor.

The obligatory Sevens Road Magician

If you think Five Headed Dragon looks stupid, think again. I'm not going to nitpick the design aspects, but rather, Just like Number 39: Utopia, this stupid monster keeps appearing at least twice in an episode, only with Yuga's duel vs Mimi, like, yes, we get it, it's Yuga's ace monster, Yusei Jaden and Yusaku's aces are celar, Junk Warrior, Elemental HERO Flamewingman, and Decode Talker, but they do use a variety of other aces in their arsenal, Hell, even Yugi and Yuya, have Dark Magician and Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon, use other than their own aces and they use pretty much everything else, yeah, we got Lightning Bolcondor, but 6 episodes, using Sevens Road Magician, not to mention the use of the same strategy, which we'll get shortly after, i think they're saving Bolcondor for Roa? I mean, it's fine to have an ace, but not to sit on their ass (if they have any) in every duel your partake.

The obligatory reused same strategy

File:Yuga quickly assembles three monsters including Sevens Road Magician.png
As far as i'm concerned for Rush Duels, there's nothing much going on with the duels themselves, yes, all of the cards (except Sevens Road Magcician) 's design is amazing, but when it comes down to gameplay,  you barely tell the difference, i know they're trying to the a theme with the types, but it's about time to diversify the strategies far beyond the linear spam of monsters, then Tribute Summon for game, this also affects the card game, yes, Rush Duels have began, but they can't remain that linear for the rest of the 3 years, right? Ironically, this contradicts the whole motto of "i think Master Duels are rigid and uncool".

As Shadi comes to explain the plot, he has nothing to explain!

File:Romin is defeated.png

Much like GX, just skip to season 2, and nothing of value would be lost, at least, if we don't get something new before then, just watch the few six episodes to establish the character's strength and weaknesses, then, just skip the filler that adds little to nothing to the plot, other than Goha attempting to destroy Rush Duels, which is weird, the little details of the plot made it sound like really nothing was going on. For now, SEVENS has that GX syndrome of having nothing new for the plot until the loose ends are tied, just bunch of forgettable characters and plot points that appear only once, except for Mimi.

Overall, i think Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS so far, is alright, it's nothing to boast about, nor to complain about, it just sets the main structure of how the story will go for the next episodes, i hope they expand more with the duel part, as well as character developments of the main cast, again, it's on-going, so i can't wait to see this. See ya.

First look at Yu-Gi-Oh: SEVENS, and thoughts

So recently NAS and Konami revealed a new anime during a stream alongside the  Master Rules 5 (I know it's Master Rules Revision April 2020), its name is Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS (so original, right?), we have no actual confirmation on when it'll begin or what else it might have, probably on April the first, so what we have right now is we have the actual characters, and the new "Rush Duel" Format, which to my knowledge, it's like Speed Duel in terms of having 3 Monster and Spell/Trap Zones, it has its own cards,  and it'll include legendary cards such as "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". The Gist of Rush Duels to my knowledge is you can have an unlimited number of Normal Summons, also, you get to draw until you have 5 monsters in your hand. So far, we got the full summary of the anime which reads as the following:
Oudo Yuga who attends Goha 7th Elementary, is a 5th Grader who develops inventions every day that he calls “Roads”. Yuga, who thinks the way Duels are run by adults are way too rigid and uncool, comes up with a new rule set everyone can enjoy.

In the days that follow, Luke in the next class over hears the rumor of a “King of Duels”. Investigating this with Yuga, they run into a mysterious person standing before an important monument… …

In order to be recognized as a King of Duels, you’ve gotta win Duels within a limited time!

“The Road I Dreamed Up, “Rush Duels” Can Do It!”

The story of Yuga and Luke, two young boys about to overturn the world of rigid unfun Duels with a new style is about to begin!!
From the looks of it, it sounds like it's kinda similar to Yuya and Pendulum Summoning, which is not exactly the most unique thing in the world to be honest, but if it works better, it'd probably be more okayish to some standards. As for the Characters:

王道 遊我(おうどう ゆうが) Oudo Yuga
Age 11
VA: Ishibashi Hiiro
A 5th Grader who loves Dueling and Inventing, who attends Goha 7th Elementary. He calls his inventions “Roads”. He thinks the Duels run by adults currently are overly rigid and super unfun, so he develops his own rule set that he dreams of entertaining the world with.
His Ace Monster is “Sevens Road Magician”.

Note: His name is basically “Royal Road” + “My Game”

ルーク(上城 龍久 かみじょう たつひさ) “Luke” Kamijo Tatsuhisa
11 Years Old
VA: Yashiro Taku
A classmate in the class next to Yuga’s, he’s the Self Proclaimed “Number One Duelist of Goha 7th Elementary”. He’s learned about the rumor of “The King of Duels”, and as he investigates about how to become a King, he learns about Yuga. Machines tend to breakdown around him.
His Ace Monster is “Rush Dragon Dragears”

Note: 上城 龍久 is composed of “Upper/Higher”, “Castle”, “Dragon” and “Eternity/Long Time”.

蒼月 学人(そうげつ がくと) Sougetsu Gakuto
12 Years Old
VA: Hanae Hatsuki
A Sixth Grader on the Student Council of 7th Elementary. A serious minded fellow who has no tolerance for tardiness, and has never been late to school. As the heir apparent of the “Sogetsu Style” of Dueling, he is fully sure of his righteousness.

Note: His name means “Blue Moon” combined with “Student”

霧島 ロミン (きりしま ろみん) Kirishima, Romin
11 Years Old
VA: Kusunoki Tomori
Yuga’s Classmate. Along with top class grades and being super good at sports, she’s the lead Guitarist of the Elementary School Band “Roar Romin”. While she doesn’t really like Duels, she’s a girl who is wrapped in mystery who often crosses pathes with Yuga and his buddies.

Her Surname means “Island of Mist”, relating to her nature as the likely “Mysterious Person” plot character.

To be honest, despite my gripe with the main cast being actual kids, Romin seems actually interesting, and i'd like to see how they execute her in application, Luke and  Gakuto, i need to see them beforehand. I have mixed feelings about Yuga.

As for the artstyle, it's hard to get used to something that is LESS detailed than we used to have, look at these two pictures for comparison:
Image result for Kotori mizuki"
Kotori Mizuki (on the left, known as Tori Meadows in the dub) vs Kirishima, Romin (on the right)

The difference is wildly huge, if you ask why, you'll know that Konami/NAS disowned Studio Galop, and instead, contracted with Bridge Studio, not a very known studio, and any Cardfight Vanguard! fan could easily recognize the new style, as i have been always saying, "Artstyle does not make the show", but even for someone like myself, it's kinda weird to get used to such drastic changes, i hope we still get Gill Bo No from time to time, by far, he's the greatest animator we've got all these years, at least from 5D's and onwards. On the bright side, NAS will finally tackle the concept of "monsters on 3D or CGI", something was omitted from Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS for possibly ARC-V Fiasco.

One last thing to note that Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS is NOT a reboot, it's merely a new generation.

Like i said, it's not easy to adapt to drastic artstyle changes, people do not like sudden changes, i'm pretty sure as the time goes in, everyone, myself included will finally get used to such artstyle.Keep your fingers crossed until April the first or whenever they reveal new data about the animation. I'll leave you with the trailler.
With that being said, i'll see you guys next time, Goodbye.
